... of a big 'ol baby!

Quinn and I met our new doctor yesterday. He is absurdly nice. Like: "Are you for real" nice. But all of my friends who go to him say that he really is just that wonderful. I'm not used to it, I guess. My previous doctor was a great guy and he was knowledgeable, but he wasn't overly... attentive.. might be the best word. So, anyway, this new doctor is great and, because it was our first visit with him, he AND his nurse did an ultrasound! We got to see the Babram after 12 long weeks with only abdominal boxing action as proof that there really was a baby in there. As usual, he provided us with really unphotogenic pictures, so here's the actual photo...

And here's the photo with some help...
He kinda looks like an alien with those deep eye sockets. But we were assured that it's just the ultrasound and all babies look like aliens in their pictures. He is also head down... which is great for delivery preparation, but not for picture taking.

Then they did measurements on some key areas of his body to see how he was developing. Here's a photo of the print out...
So his head circumference is pretty much on target (a little small, maybe). His abdominal circumference is HUGE (based on that measurement, his due date would be more than a week early). And his femur length is right on target. They use all of those measurements to determine their overall growth percentage and an estimated fetal weight. Because of that big, silly tummy, he's at a very large 4.75 lbs!! Our doctor said that he's estimating he'll be in the upper 7 to 8 lb. delivery range, which is really normal (but really scary for me). They also said that some weeks they grow faster in some areas that others. So hopefully his stomach will slow down and the rest of him will catch up and he will be normal, instead of above average.

It would be hard to fathom that Quinn and Anaka Smith (two of the "smallest" people we know) could produce an above average sized baby, unless something was wrong. We were assured that everything was fine, so hopefully we just caught him in a growth spurt.

Well, that's all for the baby logistics and stats blog. I'm sure it was highly entertaining :)

...of a name

If you've been tracking with us for awhile now, you may remember that when we were pregnant with Selah, we had a boy name chosen .  This time, we had a few boy options, but the old standby won out, because we really do like it a lot.  But just like two years ago, we still can't quite agree on a middle name for this kid. That's where you can help. His name is Simon.  After Simon Peter, the apostle.  It's five letters and it's Hebrew (like the other kids) and we like  it. But, here's the thing: We have four options for middle names.  The two that Quinn really like, I have been vehemently opposed to.  I will share them with you in the most unbiased (yeah, right) way possible and you can tell me if I'm wrong.  For real.  I won't be mad. He likes Simon Quinn and Simon Peter. Now, you may be thinking "Wait a minute... isn't Quinn Abram's middle name?" Why yes, yes it is. Much to the credit of his beloved parents, Quinn likes his na...

...of three

So we are having another baby.  Whew.  There, I said it.  No creative lead up and stunning reveal.  Just there .  Baby.  Bam. That's a little what it felt like to find out that a third child would be joining our ranks a bit short of 3.5 years after our first child was born.  We were content with our two.  A boy and a girl.  Who could ask for anything more, right?  Also, Quinn and I each have just one sister, so it seemed natural for us to stop at two. So that's what we were working to do.  I won't go into the details of it all with you in this forum, but we really were attempting to avoid pregnancy. So this wasn't a "woops" moment.  This was a "many things happening coincidentally" moment.  And so when we confirmed that we were, indeed, expecting another baby, there was a bit of shock (of course), but also peace and assurance in knowing that God definitely showed us His hand in it. We told Abram pretty early on and he...

... of a patent

... or maybe, just maybe , I'm jumping the gun :) A good friend told me the other day that she and her husband have been leaving church after the worship because she can't sit for an extended time in the folding chairs. Our church did a great thing and bought inexpensive folding chairs for our sanctuary in order to 1)save money and 2)be able to use the empty room for community type events in the neighborhood during the week. This is awesome. I support their decision and so does my friend who is leaving after the worship (and watching the previous week's sermon from home). But she is pregnant. She already had back problems and now (of course!) they are worse. My back is just starting to bother me and I know that there are many pregnant women with back problems and normal people with back problems who whimper inside a little every time they enter a room and see folding chairs. Until now, I had just sort of reconciled myself to the fact that sitting in a folding chair was ...
