...of an orange baby

Abram has been eating solids for about 6 weeks now (wow, it seems like a lot longer), but he is still not a great eater. Sometimes he doesn't want to eat baby food at all. He'll take two bites and we won't be able to trick him into any more. I don't know if this is because he doesn't like the taste or because he is just not hungry. Because sometimes he eats almost a full stage 2 jar of food. Today, for instance, he ate about 6 bites of prunes and rice cereal for breakfast and about 2 bites of mixed vegetables at lunch. He usually doesn't eat well when I try to give him peas or green beans or anything with a substantial amount of peas or green beans in it. But he will always eat squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes. I knew that I should be getting him to eat a wider variety of foods, but this wasn't a very big worry for me until my sister commented on the fact that Abram's nose looked orange.

At first I thought that I had fed him and not wiped his nose well enough and it had stained (like it does his clothes...) As this was not the case, I asked my sister (who is a doctor and, therefore, my family thinks she knows the answer to all even barely health related questions): "Do you think the orange foods are turning him orange?" Her response... "Probably".

So I am turning my baby orange. I don't want an orange baby. I don't even want and orange nosed baby. But the Beta Carotene from all of his orange foods seems to be doing just that. On the bright side, maybe it will help his eye sight. But I feel limited by the baby food on the market. There isn't a huge variety and I am confused by the fact that I think my doctor told us not to feed him meat until he is one year old, yet there are tons of meat baby foods on the shelves! What's that all about? Of all of the new things I have had to learn these last six and a half months, solid foods has been the most confusing. Nursing was the most emotional and solids is the most confusing. Man, why do babies have to eat anyway?! Just kidding... kinda...

While we figure out Bubba San's eating preferences, he is working hard at sitting up for extended periods of time and using his arms to support his weight.

He still hasn't gotten the hang of putting his legs up under himself to move anywhere, so he almost always looks like he is swimming when he is on his tummy. Resulting in lots of pivoting, but no crawling as of yet. I don't know, he may be one of those kids that learns to walk before they learn to crawl. Wouldn't that be something!

We have also tried out our baby backpack for the first time and both Abram and Daddy seem to enjoy it.

It will be fun to use on walks in our nearby "greenbelt" when it's not quite so hot. But it's a pretty cool contraption. He has also been "swimming" twice now. Once in the backyard with Dad and once at Aunt Liesl's pool.

Both times he was a little unsure of the water. But my plan is to sign us up for swimming classes at the Y in July to get him used to the water. We shall see how that goes.

Finally, one of my favorite things about my baby is that 99% of the time he will wake up from any length of nap like this:

This is only about 30 seconds of approximately 30 minutes of singing, talking, and blowing bubbles after a two hour nap as I finished up getting ready in the bathroom. And it is not unusual. LOVE. IT.

The End

... of the tipping point

I haven't blogged in so very long, I can't remember when and I'm not going to stop this thought train to go and check. Suffice it to say, it's been awhile. But I showed up here to share (and document) a major event in the life of our family.  Before Moses came home, I would see adoptive families posting about their kiddos' "Tipping Point Days". I recently heard it called something else as well, but I'm too tired to think of it right now. Basically, it is the day when your adopted child has been with you for as long as they were not  with you. For kids that were adopted at 1 or 2 or 3, that seems to come quickly and maybe feels eventful, but not monumental. Well, when we got custody of Moses he was about 4 years and 9 months old. I remember coming back to America and seeing someone in my adoption group post about their 2 or 3 year old's Tipping Point Day and thinking I should figure out when Moses's would be. So I did. I sat down and figured ou...

... of a gracious gift from God

As we have resettled and felt a calmness and stability in Austin that we knew was from the Lord, we started praying about and considering adding another child to our family. We felt like we had room in our heart and our home and so, with a lot of peace and excitement from us and the kids, we found out in September that we were expecting a baby in June 2016! We have held off telling more than close friends and family until we made it through the 12 week ultrasound appointment when we would make sure everything was looking normal. That appointment was a few weeks ago. We saw our new little squirrel wiggling around and measuring right on schedule. But after the ultrasound, at my nurse's visit, they told me that the baby's nuchal translucency (a space at the back of the neck, used for indicating a possibly chromosomal abnormality) was a little big. Not too much, but enough to cause some concern. They suggested a non-invasive blood test that could detect an abnormality wit...

... of the big wait.

It awaiting the birth of the baby, there were a few events that we were hoping we would get to attend before he came. I have to admit that there were times I wished that he would come early and we just wouldn't be able to make it. However, we have passed that final event and I am glad that he has waited to grace us with his presence. The final event was the wedding of one of Quinn's best friends. Akintunde Omitowoju is a Nigerian who grew up in between Nigerian and America and became a computer programmer. Akin moved to Japan for 5 years from 2003 to 2008 and in that time, he came to realize how much he loved Japan and will now tell anyone that he feels Japanese at heart. So how appropriate that he would meet and befriend a Japanese girl at his church in Japan who he began to date after he had moved back to Austin and started working with Quinn at Retro. Masami Nishida moved to America just a few weeks ago and their wedding was Saturday night! We were all praying that Ab...
