... of serious productivity

It is amazing what a good nap can do. No, not my nap. Abram's nap. Up until this week, he has consistently been taking 30-45 minute naps about four times a day. This was annoying because there is not much a mom can get done in 30 minutes. You start something and before you know it, you are dropping everything to go get the baby and start the feeding/play/putting to sleep process all over again.

But when that baby gets a good 1.5 to 2.5 hour nap in the late morning, it is incredible how much that mom can get done. This week, I successfully cleaned the house more thoroughly than I probably ever have, made a skirt, and a baby sling! Here is a bad picture of Abram in the sling.

And today I have altered a friend's bridesmaid dress and now I am blogging. Too crazy. I haven't gotten this much done since I was five months pregnant (It was about that point when I got very whiny and self pitying and I just laid around and watched TV all day. It was a sad state of affairs that I will not let happen the next time around).

So I am very excited to actually have my head above water for the first time in a long time. Now I just have to keep it up and I think that I will consistently feel a lot better and maybe even WANT to invite people over to our house... even... SPONTANEOUSLY (gasp!).

The nap was a definite factor, but I believe that the introduction of solid foods had a lot to do with the nap and his sudden turn into sleeping better and longer during the night. I am glad we waited until now to start, though, because baby food feeding is quite an involved and annoying process that I wouldn't have wanted to deal with before this. He started rice cereal over two weeks ago and is now on day three of avocado flavored rice cereal. I had tried sweet potatoes, but that was a big no go. We'll see if his pallet will expand now that he's successfully taken to a new taste. We've gotten quite a few cute high chair pics. (P.S. The Ikea Antilop high chair is by far one of the best bargain baby buys I have found. High chairs are expensive, man! Even second hand. This plastic, easy to clean, stury chair with bolster pillow was $30!)

Grandma Gae and Bopa Scott sure had a good time feeding Abram while they were here this weekend. And they were good at it! He really got the hang of it when Bopa was feeding him and he took off from there.

We also got to go on a hike while they were visiting. Here are some essential family hiking shots.

We are so glad they got to come see Abram and we are hoping to get to Colorado and Idaho for a visit in August. We can't go too long without seeing his wonderful grandparents!

And, finally, here are some extras:

Quinn and I out to eat with the fam.

Our wonderful community group at Easter brunch. We sure love these guys!

  1. I remember when Ryan started taking longer naps, it really helped so much. In just a few more months he's going to be crawling all around the house.

... of the tipping point

I haven't blogged in so very long, I can't remember when and I'm not going to stop this thought train to go and check. Suffice it to say, it's been awhile. But I showed up here to share (and document) a major event in the life of our family.  Before Moses came home, I would see adoptive families posting about their kiddos' "Tipping Point Days". I recently heard it called something else as well, but I'm too tired to think of it right now. Basically, it is the day when your adopted child has been with you for as long as they were not  with you. For kids that were adopted at 1 or 2 or 3, that seems to come quickly and maybe feels eventful, but not monumental. Well, when we got custody of Moses he was about 4 years and 9 months old. I remember coming back to America and seeing someone in my adoption group post about their 2 or 3 year old's Tipping Point Day and thinking I should figure out when Moses's would be. So I did. I sat down and figured ou...

... of a gracious gift from God

As we have resettled and felt a calmness and stability in Austin that we knew was from the Lord, we started praying about and considering adding another child to our family. We felt like we had room in our heart and our home and so, with a lot of peace and excitement from us and the kids, we found out in September that we were expecting a baby in June 2016! We have held off telling more than close friends and family until we made it through the 12 week ultrasound appointment when we would make sure everything was looking normal. That appointment was a few weeks ago. We saw our new little squirrel wiggling around and measuring right on schedule. But after the ultrasound, at my nurse's visit, they told me that the baby's nuchal translucency (a space at the back of the neck, used for indicating a possibly chromosomal abnormality) was a little big. Not too much, but enough to cause some concern. They suggested a non-invasive blood test that could detect an abnormality wit...

... of a shower

I have found (in my two days of experience), that the thing most sacrificed as a stay at home mom is personal hygiene. Or maybe this is just me. Maybe I don't prioritize it enough and you are all thinking: "How disgusting! That is always at the top of my list". Well, good for you. So far, my list has consisted of: feeding a baby, calming a crying baby, walking around the house trying not to wake the time bomb baby strapped to my chest. Rinse and repeat. Or don't rinse, just repeat. That's the whole point of this commentary. With a baby attached to some part of your body every second of the day, when are you supposed to shower? Or at least wash your face and brush your teeth? Today, I put him in his carseat while he was crying, ran into the shower, cleaned myself moderately well, and jumped out, only to find that he had cried himself to sleep. This was great, except that I would have taken a better shower if I knew THAT was going to happen. Oh well. At le...
