... of a big little kid

It baffles me how much Abram is growing and changing and learning every day. He gets smarter (and a bit more defiant) by the minute. Yesterday was a big milestone for this guy. He's been walking for almost two months, but he's recently gotten really fast and has almost completely eliminated crawling from his repertoire. Every day, he goes and stares out the back window at stuff in the yard, trying to get me to let him out there to play.

Normally I would indulge him, but it's been on and off rainy these last few days and everything is muddy. Also, Quinn put some kind of fertilizer or something out in the yard last weekend and we haven't wanted Abram playing out there until we were sure the water had made it soak in. So finally I asked him if he wanted to check the mail. He always agrees. It used to be that his agreement took the form of a head nod and uplifted arms for me to pick him up and carry him out there. But now, it looks like a bobbling head as he marches to the front door and tries to open it. So we went out there (him walking - me watching closely), checked the mail, and he continued walking on the side walk away from the house. He's done this before and we've gone about 100 yards around the corner and then turned around.

Yesterday we just kept walking. And I wasn't walking at a very slow pace. It was actually quite a pleasant pace for a 32 week pregnant mom. We walked the usual path that we take him in the stroller - which is why I think he did a very good job staying on course. We live on this street that we love because no one ever drives on it. It goes off of the main neighborhood street and then reconnects about a quarter mile down. Our route is kind of like a track; a half mile track. And Abram walked the entire thing all by himself. He would grab for my hand whenever he saw a step down or up (meaning a crack in the sidewalk that shifted up because of tree roots). But he never really looked up at me. He was so intent on looking at everything, but he didn't touch anything! There was a weird lid of some kind on the sidewalk at one point and he looked like he wanted to go for it, but I just said "leave that alone" and he walked around it and continued on. It was incredible. I kept asking him if he wanted me to pick him up and he would shake his head every time. Maybe there are a lot of almost 16 month olds that would walk half a mile and cry when they are picked up and taken inside at the end because they wanted to keep going. But I guess I didn't think there were.

Since it was an impromptu trip, I didn't have a camera or even my phone with me. I really wish I had, but I'll take one on the next walk - as I'm sure there will be more.

During lunch, I noticed that he's got a Quinn Smith/Jim Halpert hair wing thing going on behind his ears and it's pretty much adorable.

I think this means he might need another hair cut soon, but maybe we'll just let it grow and see what happens. Maybe he'll be able to fly soon.

And the day ended with more racetracks, but this one is inside on Lightning McQueen with Daddy pushing him as fast as he can go without face planting in his socks. I am usually lying on the couch dealing with a crazy girl baby and contractions after dinner and they will zoom by every few seconds. Sometimes Abram will wave, sometimes he's talking on his phone (wonder where he learned to talk on the phone while driving... I always use my hands free :), sometimes he is concentrating on something very hard (not falling off?) Anyway. It's pretty cute.

My little baby boy is growing up so fast!

... of the tipping point

I haven't blogged in so very long, I can't remember when and I'm not going to stop this thought train to go and check. Suffice it to say, it's been awhile. But I showed up here to share (and document) a major event in the life of our family.  Before Moses came home, I would see adoptive families posting about their kiddos' "Tipping Point Days". I recently heard it called something else as well, but I'm too tired to think of it right now. Basically, it is the day when your adopted child has been with you for as long as they were not  with you. For kids that were adopted at 1 or 2 or 3, that seems to come quickly and maybe feels eventful, but not monumental. Well, when we got custody of Moses he was about 4 years and 9 months old. I remember coming back to America and seeing someone in my adoption group post about their 2 or 3 year old's Tipping Point Day and thinking I should figure out when Moses's would be. So I did. I sat down and figured ou...

... of a patent

... or maybe, just maybe , I'm jumping the gun :) A good friend told me the other day that she and her husband have been leaving church after the worship because she can't sit for an extended time in the folding chairs. Our church did a great thing and bought inexpensive folding chairs for our sanctuary in order to 1)save money and 2)be able to use the empty room for community type events in the neighborhood during the week. This is awesome. I support their decision and so does my friend who is leaving after the worship (and watching the previous week's sermon from home). But she is pregnant. She already had back problems and now (of course!) they are worse. My back is just starting to bother me and I know that there are many pregnant women with back problems and normal people with back problems who whimper inside a little every time they enter a room and see folding chairs. Until now, I had just sort of reconciled myself to the fact that sitting in a folding chair was ...

... of the big wait.

It awaiting the birth of the baby, there were a few events that we were hoping we would get to attend before he came. I have to admit that there were times I wished that he would come early and we just wouldn't be able to make it. However, we have passed that final event and I am glad that he has waited to grace us with his presence. The final event was the wedding of one of Quinn's best friends. Akintunde Omitowoju is a Nigerian who grew up in between Nigerian and America and became a computer programmer. Akin moved to Japan for 5 years from 2003 to 2008 and in that time, he came to realize how much he loved Japan and will now tell anyone that he feels Japanese at heart. So how appropriate that he would meet and befriend a Japanese girl at his church in Japan who he began to date after he had moved back to Austin and started working with Quinn at Retro. Masami Nishida moved to America just a few weeks ago and their wedding was Saturday night! We were all praying that Ab...
