... of stereotyping

Maybe my high school was different than yours. Maybe not. But when I was in high school, there was a group of kids I liked to call the "walking readers". They were the kids whose best friends were books. The books were so engrossing that they, literally, couldn't put it down. It was usually some kind of science fiction novel and they would read them while walking down the hallways during passing period. Most of the time these were the smartest kids in the school as well, so some of them would read throughout class because they already knew everything that was being taught. These were the kids who aced the SAT and has newspaper articles written about them and were accepted to MIT and Harvard and the like. The problem was that their best friends were books. And sometimes each other. But mostly just the books. It was a little sad. Was I the only person with "walking reader" kids at my school? Were you a walking reader? Well, today my son showed signs of...

So I failed. My diet didn't work. And what is a bit more worrisome is that I did do the diet and the one hour came back higher than than it did with Abram. With Abram it was a little high at 186 and with Selah it's also "a little high", but higher, at 213. I'm supposed to follow this type of diet until my three hour test on February 20th: -Avoid all simple sugars: candy, cakes, sodas, desserts, jelly, and honey. This has been my diet for the last few months and the only "craving" I had, so I've indulged. No more. -Always balance carbohydrates with protein. With each meal, eat the same amount of protein as you eat carbohydrates. Our fall back meal at this house is pasta. Just pasta with sauce. No more. -Choose high fiber carbs, i.e. whole grain breads and pasta, brown rice, and potatoes with the skin on. That's easy. We only have that stuff in our house. -Fruit juice is high in natural sugar and should be avoided. Sad, because blueb...

... of a little explorer

I shouldn't be surprised. He is Quinn's son, after all. Since really starting to walk about three weeks ago, I've been waiting to let Abram loose outside. But I wanted to wait until he was a little more sturdy. Also, until the ground wasn't soaked. We've had quite a bit of rain lately and it's kind of muddy in parts of our backyard. So today was the day! He was such a good buddy, running a few errands this afternoon and only having one small screamy moment in Joann's when I wouldn't let him put a skein of yarn in his mouth and I took it away. When we got home, we went to swing in his swing and when he wanted down after a few minutes, I let him go! I like this picture I took while following him around. It's like a little people's Levi's ad. He may look more like me, but he's definitely his Daddy's kid.

.... of a diet.

Before you freak out on me... hold on... and let me start on a more fun note. We are also on the verge of 28 weeks (tomorrow). I'll throw these pictures in here and not do a whole post on my wiggly baby girl who is getting heavier by the day. Not quite 2.5 pounds and my back is already hurting at the end of the day. 12 more weeks is seeming a bit daunting. Selah and I - almost 28 weeks Abram and I-28 weeks They look almost identical! Crazy. Guess there isn't always a different in how boys and girls are carried. And I did not plan to wear the same shirt. Obviously, there is a very warm sweater added to this recent February photo that wasn't needed in the August photo. I also look much more like I don't care about my make-up and hair now (which is definitely true, I'm not denying). So, back to the diet... I have my 28 week glucose test at the OB on Wednesday. In case you are unaware, it's a blood test that checks for anemia and ...

So today's photo a day challenge is "stranger". That's hard! On a normal day, I would be able to have my phone out and sneak a picture while we were running errands and stuff. But today is Saturday and not any old Saturday. A Saturday filled with friends. At a birthday party this afternoon, Abram met a very cute Maltese named Dude that I tried to get a picture of, but it proved to be difficult. Mostly because I was trying to make sure that Abram was being gentle and wasn't going to get his first dog-nibble because he wasn't. Tonight we are having dinner with some friends we haven't seen in awhile. So they aren't strangers... What am I going to do!? I can't fail! We'll see if I come up with some creative interpretation of "stranger" by the time I head to bed tonight.

... of a rest

Lately, Abram has been sleeping for about 10-11 hours at night. From about 8-7. Then he seems to be ready for a nap around 10. He's been taking a 1.5 - 2 hour morning nap. Common sense would say that if he could only make it 3 hours in the morning after having a full night of sleep, he would definitely need an afternoon nap still, right? Every day I lay him down around 4/4:30. He stays in his room until 5:30. If he's not asleep by then, I get him out. Around 50% of the time, he falls asleep within 30 minutes or so. About 20% of the time, he falls asleep right before 5:30. And about 30% of the time, he plays in his crib until 5:15ish, then lays down really still for 5-10 minutes making me think that he's asleep, only to bolt up and start playing again right around 5:30. I don't usually care whether he actually falls asleep. He's content in his crib, he doesn't cry, and even if he doesn't sleep, it helps him last through the rest of the evening. I ...

... of a photo a day

I found this blog/idea/project on pinterest. I guess she did it in January and today was the start of a February one. I take pictures, but not every day. And I want to take more. So this will be my motivation! Today's "challenge" was Your View Today . Well, this is my view almost all the time, every day. It's a pretty good one :) I love the little scar on his lip that he got in Phoenix (story here ). It's crazy that it will be there for the rest of his life and he got it when he was only 11 months old. There won't be a Febphotoaday post everyday, but I hope to share some of the pictures with you throughout the month. If you want to see it every day, follow me on twitter (@anaka_smith). It's going to be my foray into twitter. We'll see how that goes. Hope you had a good first day of February!!
