... of serious productivity

It is amazing what a good nap can do. No, not my nap. Abram's nap. Up until this week, he has consistently been taking 30-45 minute naps about four times a day. This was annoying because there is not much a mom can get done in 30 minutes. You start something and before you know it, you are dropping everything to go get the baby and start the feeding/play/putting to sleep process all over again.

But when that baby gets a good 1.5 to 2.5 hour nap in the late morning, it is incredible how much that mom can get done. This week, I successfully cleaned the house more thoroughly than I probably ever have, made a skirt, and a baby sling! Here is a bad picture of Abram in the sling.

And today I have altered a friend's bridesmaid dress and now I am blogging. Too crazy. I haven't gotten this much done since I was five months pregnant (It was about that point when I got very whiny and self pitying and I just laid around and watched TV all day. It was a sad state of affairs that I will not let happen the next time around).

So I am very excited to actually have my head above water for the first time in a long time. Now I just have to keep it up and I think that I will consistently feel a lot better and maybe even WANT to invite people over to our house... even... SPONTANEOUSLY (gasp!).

The nap was a definite factor, but I believe that the introduction of solid foods had a lot to do with the nap and his sudden turn into sleeping better and longer during the night. I am glad we waited until now to start, though, because baby food feeding is quite an involved and annoying process that I wouldn't have wanted to deal with before this. He started rice cereal over two weeks ago and is now on day three of avocado flavored rice cereal. I had tried sweet potatoes, but that was a big no go. We'll see if his pallet will expand now that he's successfully taken to a new taste. We've gotten quite a few cute high chair pics. (P.S. The Ikea Antilop high chair is by far one of the best bargain baby buys I have found. High chairs are expensive, man! Even second hand. This plastic, easy to clean, stury chair with bolster pillow was $30!)

Grandma Gae and Bopa Scott sure had a good time feeding Abram while they were here this weekend. And they were good at it! He really got the hang of it when Bopa was feeding him and he took off from there.

We also got to go on a hike while they were visiting. Here are some essential family hiking shots.

We are so glad they got to come see Abram and we are hoping to get to Colorado and Idaho for a visit in August. We can't go too long without seeing his wonderful grandparents!

And, finally, here are some extras:

Quinn and I out to eat with the fam.

Our wonderful community group at Easter brunch. We sure love these guys!

  1. I remember when Ryan started taking longer naps, it really helped so much. In just a few more months he's going to be crawling all around the house.

... of a patent

... or maybe, just maybe , I'm jumping the gun :) A good friend told me the other day that she and her husband have been leaving church after the worship because she can't sit for an extended time in the folding chairs. Our church did a great thing and bought inexpensive folding chairs for our sanctuary in order to 1)save money and 2)be able to use the empty room for community type events in the neighborhood during the week. This is awesome. I support their decision and so does my friend who is leaving after the worship (and watching the previous week's sermon from home). But she is pregnant. She already had back problems and now (of course!) they are worse. My back is just starting to bother me and I know that there are many pregnant women with back problems and normal people with back problems who whimper inside a little every time they enter a room and see folding chairs. Until now, I had just sort of reconciled myself to the fact that sitting in a folding chair was ...

...of the same, but different

When we came back to Austin from the UAE and Quinn started back at his old job and we went right back to the same church and are even a few months away from moving back into our old house, we struggled with feeling like the previous two and half years just didn't happen. Sure, we had another child, but it all felt the same as it had. Except that our hearts were completely different. God had pulled us out of our former comfort zone and opened our hearts and eyes to a people who desperately needed His love. So when we came back, we were like different people in the same life. Even though those two years were less than we had planned and the memory of them gets further and further away, He still used them to shape and transform us in ways we never could have imagined. It was like we had entered some kind of time warp where everything was the same and different all at once. Then, just a few weeks ago, when we discovered that our fourth baby, Joanna Lynn, had Down syndrome, everyth...

...of big changes

Let's start with a cute picture of Abram and Selah in Spain: Adorbs. Now... I posted earlier today while I was waiting to see a rheumatologist in Dubai. I had been referred by the ortho doctor I had seen in Fujairah on multiple occasions over the last few months for my finger and back problems. My sister is a dermatologist and knows that I have had psoriasis for years and she also thought I needed to see a rheumatologist.  Just in case you aren't aware, psoriasis is basically an itchy skin condition. Basically. But there's actually more to it than that (which I wasn't even aware of until very recently.) It is a chronic auto immune problem. My body's immune system (for some undetermined reason) attacks healthy skin cells and it results in itchy patches of skin. Pretty awesome, right? In about 20% of people with skin psoriasis, the immune system will also start attacking the joints, which is why I found myself in a very nice rheumatologist's...
